ClintonbecamegovernorofNewYorkin1817andshortlyafterwardsonJuly41817brokegroundforthecanalinRomeN.Y.Thefirstpartofthecanalwas40feetwideand4feetdeep.Between1836and1862theErieCanalwasenlargedtoadepthof7feet.In1903athirdcanalwasbegunknownastheBargeCanal.Completedin1918itusedanewrouteinmanyplaces.Itis12to14feetdeep120to200feetwideand363mileslongfromAlbanytoBuffalo.TheErieCanaltodayisusedlargelybyrecreationalboats.
